Even before scientific studies explored whether or not it is effective, many people were using cannabidiol (CBD) to overcome their pain. Unlike other compounds like THC, cannabidiol does not induce a psychoactive ‘high’ in its users. The very receptors that are targeted by this compound are also different from that of THC.

The human body has an endocannabiniod system (ECS) which takes in this compound and translates it into something very different. The effects of this compound regulate the individual’s sleep, pain and immune system responses.

This does not mean that CBD effects the ECS systems in our body — it actually does the exact opposite. A study conducted to find its effects found out that it actually inhibits some other compounds in this system. CBD induces something called anandamine in the body, which is known to naturally regulate pain. This means that people were able to naturally create something in their body which decreased the amount of pain being suffered.

This compound helps heal inflammation in the nervous system and in the brain, making certain immune system responses more efficient. The compound is also said to help with insomnia. The breeding process of the cannabis plant determines how effective the healing process will be. Industrial hemps are used to extract this compound, as they have much more CBD content in them than marijuana.

CBD has been in use for thousands of years to cure pain, but since the medical community recently got involved, some interesting results were found. The following are a few of them:

Arthritis Pain

A study where CBD oil was used on animals with arthritis, a topical gel was applied on the rats for four consecutive days. The results showed that signs of pain and inflammation levels had significantly dropped without any side effects.

Multiple Sclerosis

MS is an autoimmune disease which has the ability to affect the brain along with nerves in the whole body. The most common symptom of this disease is muscle spasms, which can cause a great deal of pain. An experimental prescription of CBD oil on some people who suffered MS was able to gather some interesting results. There was a significant reduction in levels of spasms and therefore the pain that came with it.

Chronic Pain

A very similar experiment was conducted on people who experienced general chronic pain. Multiple systematic reviews were derived from dozens of studies and trials. The subsequent result of this study illustrated that CBD is a very effective treatment in adults. Another revelation of the study was that people did not build a tolerance so that they would have to continually increase levels of dosage.
